Physician Profiles

John S. Rizzo, M.D. is a board certified ophthalmologist. He specializes in medical retina and provides comprehensive ophthalmologic services. He received his undergraduate degree — Cum Laude in biology from Boston University. He then attended medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. where he received his medical degree — Magna Cum Laude.

Dr. Rizzo went on to perform his medical internship at Washington Hospital Center. He then completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. He has been an active member of the teaching service in the cataract and primary eye care service at Wills Eye Hospital for over thirty years.

Dr. Rizzo was the former chairman for the Department of Ophthalmology at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park. His educational honors and awards include the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and he received the Kober Medal for his academic performance at Georgetown Medical School. He also served as president of The Ophthalmic Club of Philadelphia.

He enjoys biking, hiking, photography, and tennis. After a long and successful career at SRROA, Dr. Rizzo is now enjoying retirement.

John J. Ruffini, M.D. is board certified in ophthalmology. He specializes in cornea and provides comprehensive ophthalmologic services. After graduating from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, Dr. Ruffini received his doctor of medicine degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He then performed his internship at Bryn Mawr Hospital and went on to complete his residency in Ophthalmology at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Dr. Ruffini completed his cornea fellowship at the University of Rochester School of Medicine in New York.

Dr. Ruffini has authored publications and articles in ophthalmic literature. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Delaware County Medical Society, Intercounty and Philadelphia Ophthalmic Societies, Pennsylvania Medical Association, Ophthalmic Club of Philadelphia, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Ruffini is also a former president of Taylor Hospital Medical / Dental staff.

Monica S. Zhang, M.D. is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who specializes in glaucoma. She treats various forms of glaucoma, including narrow angle, open angle, and steroid-induced glaucoma. She performs various laser procedures, cataract surgery, and glaucoma surgery.

Dr. Zhang graduated with a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, where she majored in Biology and Romance Languages. She then attended Emory University School of Medicine. After finishing her internship in medicine at Lehigh Valley Health System in Allentown, she returned to Emory University for her ophthalmology residency. Dr. Zhang completed her ophthalmology training at Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, where she did a glaucoma fellowship. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Glaucoma Society. Dr. Zhang is also fluent in French, Spanish and Shanghai Dialect.
